Salzburg Strolling

I labeled this Salzburg strolling and in my case that was true. Dale on the other hand took those strolls with me then did a couple of afternoons of true touring.

These first ones are ones I download from Dales yesterday walk. Since I did not go, I will only make a comment here and there until we get to the parts I took pictures of. They are really fun pictures and he took some pictures of signs he found that will give some explanations. These are all from our side of the river. Tomorrow’s post will have photos from the other side.

This is a shot of the funicular railway that you can take instead of walking all the way up to the fortress.

Looking down from the fortress

We are on the closer side of the river

Dale said that that these are all pictures of antique marionettes

Down to here are all the antique puppets

Now we are to pictures I took.  This is one of the many museums in the area. It is a toy museum

This church is called Kollegienkirche

This tunnel is Sigmundstor, it was built in built in 1764. It was on  city gates as well as connection two parts of the area. It is the oldest road tunnel in Austria, being 131 meters long (about 500 feet).

Shop window on our walk

There is a farmers market in the street just over and down from our hotel. It is there every morning

Rain or shine

It is just set up in this big street/courtyard

Don’t know what kind of tree this was, but it was growing in and through the evergreen beside it

There are archways all over and walkway right through buildings

It is not possible to show or tell you how nice this place feels

This is part of the St Peter’s Cathedral complex

This is the square right at one entrance to the complex

The square is completely surrounded by this building

One of the inside areas

They are getting set up for the opening of the Christmas markets

I walked around and ok some pictures in this area

It looks like it will be eating area

And possibly a place music will be played

Walking in the cemetery part of St Peters

One of the walls leading to family areas

Each alcove seemed to be a different family name

This is the entrance to the catacombs that they carved right into the mountain. We did not go through them as they were charging an admission fee.

Back in the late Middle Ages around 800’s AD Salzburg was granted by the pope the right to have a market. No town could have a market unless given a special dispensation from the pope. This helped it to become one of the riches cities around. This is where the very first market was believed to be. It is in a part of the St Peter’s Cathedral complex

Where the biggest market in the area  will open on Nov 23, this year

We walked through the area the area as they were setting some of the booth up

They were also putting up some of the decoration.

There are supposed to be around 100 stall, which was about the number that were at the Vienna main market. They have an ice skating rink set up at one end, but I am pretty sure they will not have the carnival rides that were in Vienna

The entrance to the modern art museum

This was the Archbishop of Salzburg’s palace, now a museum

This was just along the street as we were leaving the main square of the Christmas market. It is a weather statin

Squares like this dot this part of the city.

The streets are Middle Ages or baroque

These chocolates were invented and are still made here. They are pretty good, and this is from a girl who pretty much only likes the dark chocolates or dark chocolate with nuts.

Many of the side streets are being decorated also. I am hoping they turn on all the lights on the streets the day the markets open

These guys are going to be making the trip to the US. They should arrive shortly after we get back. I loved this store, it had so many beautiful things.

Here is a sign they had up. I wish I could trust myself with breakable things, I would have gotten some of their blown glass hand painted ornaments, as some of their ornament were pretty awesome, but I know me.

Loved this window. They have the cutest kids clothes here. Actually some wonderful stuff, but a lot is made of wool, which means it is not for me as I am allergic to wool

This statue has a legend that goes with it. It is said that once when the town was under siege and they were down to their last cow in the fortress, instead of killing it, each day the painted it different bovine patterns and paraded it across the battlement where it could be seen by the army surrounding the town. This was to make them believe each day they took a different cow to slaughter to feed those in the fortress. Tricking them into thinking they had tons of food. The attacking army figured that they were wasting their time on the siege as they could not starve them out, so the enemy packed up and left. Have no idea if any part of the story is true, but it is a fun story.

Another of the squares

Some of the style of clothes in the window of a store

Another courtyard being decorated as we walked through

Each street has charm and it’s own style

Yesterday we had pizza for lunch, today we went Austrian with Wiener schnitzel.
I am enjoying relaxing in this city and especially the old town parts
